Purpose and approach
Why was the TOT created?
Dr. Mark Spitsbergen began this translation to give English readers a clear, reverent rendering of Scripture grounded in the historic textual tradition of the Church.
Historic textual basis
The New Testament draws from the Byzantine Text Type, the Textus Receptus, and the Peshitta—traditions long received and used by the Church.
Literal translation
The work favors a careful, word-for-word approach intended to preserve the structure and meaning of the biblical text.
For study and devotion
Created for personal reading, teaching, and serious biblical study, with language that is clear while remaining faithful to its source.
About the translation
Accuracy, reverence, and historical faithfulness
The Word of God is living and eternal—given through His prophets and apostles and faithfully preserved for the Church.
The Translation in the Oldest Tradition brings decades of biblical study together in a growing body of work. The New Testament is translated from the Byzantine Text Type, the Textus Receptus, and the Peshitta textual traditions.
Psalms and Proverbs are translated directly from the Hebrew Masoretic Text, maintaining the structure and verse numbering of the original. As work continues through the Old Testament, each new portion is prepared with the same commitment to accuracy and clarity.
