Daily Bread - August 4, 2026 (The Third Day - Genesis 1:9-13)
Jonah 3:2 – Arise, go to Ninevah, that great city, and preach to it the proclamation that I speak to you.
God is the One Who gives direction to His servants to go to the places He chooses. God is also the One Who gives His servants the message they are to speak. He was about to send judgment upon a nation, but before He did, He desired to give them an opportunity to repent. Jonah, knowing the mercies of God, did not want to go because he knew it was God’s desire to bring this nation to repentance so He could show His abundant love. Jonah knew that if the nation of Nineveh repented, God would not send judgment upon them and while it was in the heart of God to show mercy and love, it was in the heart of Jonah to see judgment fall on that wicked and evil people (Jonah 4:1-3). Even though the people of Nineveh were terribly wicked the preaching of Jonah brought such conviction upon them that they all repented and turned from their wickedness. It does not matter how wicked a city is, or how estranged a person may be from God, when anyone humbles themself before God and turns from their evil, God shows His mercy and forgives them (Jonah 3:8,10; 2 Peter 3:9).
We are the ambassadors of Christ sent into the world today to beseech the world to be reconciled to God. We are commanded to go to every person and tell them that God commands all men everywhere to repent, to change (Acts 17:30; Mark 1:15; Matthew 28:19). The direction has been given to us by God, and we have been commissioned by Him to go. If we will speak His words that He gives us to proclaim, then the power of His mercy should reach deep into the hearts of everyone who hears. Those who will believe, who will repent and call upon His Name, will be saved. Those who refuse to hear will experience only wrath and judgment (Matthew 3:7; Mark 16:16; Romans 2:5, 5:9; Ephesians 2:3, 5:6).
